Jeff Wagner sucks as a media analyst
Jeff Wagner, living proof that anyone – and the Brawler means anyone – can become a lawyer, on Tuesday posed a compelling question to his hapless audience: Does the media suck at covering elections?
A reason the media sucks, in Jeff’s view, is the way they attacked Sarah Palin’s pregnant daughter.
A caller challenged Jeff on this point, saying that while columnists or bloggers may have (in poor taste) mocked Sarah Palin’s daughter, news reports didn’t. He asked Jeff to point to one that did.
Jeff’s explanation: The very act of reporting that Sarah Palin’s 17-year-old daughter was pregnant amounts to an attack!
“Kids have always been off limits, that’s always been the rule before Sarah Palin,” Jeff said, cutting off the caller.
So the media’s job apparently was to ignore the fact that Sarah’s daughter was visibly pregnant. And when her grandchild arrived, apparently we should credit it to the magic stork.
A caller later said that if the situation were reversed and Barack Obama had a pregnant teen daughter, the media would be all over it – as would Wags.
That caller, too, was cut off. Wags fulminated: “There’s no way in God’s green earth” that the New York Times would have had three stories on the front page about a pregnant Obama girl. “No way.”
Please. If a member of a presidential ticket has a pregnant teenage daughter, the media will report on it. If for no other reason that everyone can see it! Reporting that fact had nothing to do with the fact that Palin is conservative and making that argument is nothing short of pathetic. (But the Brawler gives Wags credit for not denying that he would be talking about it.)
Also, I distinctly remember that the McCain campaign issued a press release stating that this daughter was pregnant.
