The Brawler is somewhat surprised at the amount of surprise greeting the nasty turn in the McCain campaign.
Why? Because back in the early years of his political career -- back in 1988 -- McCain was part of the Atwater machine throwing sleaze at Michael Dukakis and he went on to crack a short guy joke about the Duke and question Dems' patriotism at the Republican National Convention. He was bruited as a potential VP candidate but he was passed over for Dan Quayle, possibly because his cheating on and shabby treatment of his first wife deeply alienated the Reagans. (Not that would undermine Charlie Sykes' support.)
