Apparently a lawyer who contracted with a collection agency Steve Kagen would use to go after deadbeats (the gall!) is miffed that the Republicans are portraying him as a scumbag.
From the 10/4 Appleton Post-Crescent:
APPLETON -- An Appleton lawyer is upset that Republican Party campaign literature that promotes John Gard for Congress presents a misleading portrait of his professional relationship with Gard's Democratic opponent.
Gard, a Peshtigo Republican, is running against Steve Kagen of Appleton for the 8th District congressional seat.
Campaign materials paid for by state and national Republican organizations say Kagen hired attorney Thomas Zoesch to go after patients who hadn't paid their bills.
The materials also say Zoesch is a "bloodthirsty" attorney who represented serial killer David Spanbauer and other "degenerates."
Zoesch, who said he never has met Kagen, worked under contract for several years for a collection agency that represented Kagen. If the agency decided a person should be sued, Zoesch said, his name appeared as the attorney on the small claims paperwork. But he was working on behalf of the collection agency, not the collection agency's client, Zoesch said.
Christine Mangi, a spokeswoman for the Gard campaign, said their staff did not create the materials.
"You would have to contact the Republican Party of Wisconsin because we don't have any control over what they or any third party puts out," she said. "You should apply the same scrutiny to the ads the Kagen campaign is running against John."
Rick Wiley, executive director of the state GOP, defends the language.
"He (Kagen) said he never hired an attorney and that is completely false," Wiley said. "Kagen lied about hiring an attorney and that lie is what our piece points out. No, I don't think it is over the top."
Kagen called the ads a "process of deceit and deception."
Zoesch is just looking for an apology.
"John Gard bears some responsibility for the people who are putting this inflammatory stuff out and he owes me an apology," said Zoesch.
Ironically, Zoesch said he voted for Gard in the primary.
"I am debating who to vote for in November and I am not going to vote for this Gard guy unless he disavows this stuff," said Zoesch.
You gotta love the accountability. You gotta love how Republicans want to take on the issues while the Democrats just want to sling mud. You gotta love the constituent service. And you gotta love Gard's flack: She does a dead on impression of his whiny ass.
Meanwhile, the Brawler is impressed that the Republicans are so dedicated to voter suppression that they will target their own voters. That's commitment.
