Would John Gard vote for Denny Hastert -- who at a minimum knew about Mark Foley's "send me a picture" emails -- as Speaker of the House should the Republicans maintain their majority in the next Congress? Would he support House Majority Leader John Boehner, who also knew about the emails?
(It's a question Talking Points Memo is putting to candidates across the country.)
It's a pretty simple question. And it's a pertinent one. John Gard told Charlie Sykes that if the voters of the 8th want someone to clean up Congress, he's their guy.
Thing is, Johnny "Per Diem" Gard has been reluctance to clean house in the past.
From a 9.29 Wisconsin Democratic Party press release:
Despite the fact that former Assembly Republican Speaker Scott Jensen was charged with three felonies and one misdemeanor for his role in the caucus scandal, John Gard, as Assembly Speaker, not only named Jensen the chair of two important committees - the Education Reform Committee and the Energy and Utilities Committee - he also named him to the powerful Joint Finance Committee. Jensen was later convicted on all accounts for directing state employees to illegally campaign on state time.
If John couldn't do the right thing in Wisconsin, how could he be trusted to do so in Washington? If he wants to prove his independence from the party establishment -- which he embraced during the primary -- he ought to give back the money they poured into his campaign. Again, that's the kind of straightforward statement you'd expect from a farm kid from Lena.
