Part of Brawler's problem is that he believes that the socialist government or any kind of government had anything to do with the city's former success.

When Milwaukee had a lot of manufacturing jobs, it was because the city had a large supply of skilled labor - most of them immigrants. This success had nothing to do with centralized government planning or political philosophy.

The prevalent socialism however did lead to powerful public and private labor unions. Those unions then hastened the end of the good paying jobs and the employers who provided them.

Brawler should embrace this reality because the city will die unless the labor unions start realizing that they have the power to destroy.
