In his latest exercise in conservative victimology, Charlie Sykes on Tuesday morning bemoaned how Republican feel intimidated by “in-your-face” Obama supporters.
Yes, this would be the same Sykes who applauded Palin worshippers for flipping off a media bus at the Cedarburg McCain rally (and rally-goers were not shy in getting in the face of anti-McCain protesters).
Not only are they getting in your face at the water cooler -- i.e., asking why you want four more years of Bushism or something worse. Obama supporters allegedly are tearing down your yard signs, keying your car if you have a McCain sticker, and committing random acts of vandalism.
“I would guess that of the (presidential) yard signs that are stolen or ripped up, 80% will be McCain signs,” Sykes said, conceding he didn’t have any info to back that up but that’s never stopped him before. (A Jefferson County caller pointed out this stuff goes both ways, but Chuck maintains, sans numbers, Obama supporters do it more.) Sykes even confessed he was scared to put a McCain sticker on his car.
As for Sykes' 80% figure, tell that to this Oregon woman who had two Obama signs stolen. Maybe it's Romney dead-enders swiping McCain signs!
Sykes and his callers suspect that virulent Obamafascism is making people reluctant to admit they support McCain. Demonstrating his orthogonian tendencies, Sykes said he suspects there’s a “silent majority” of McCain supporters out there.
In other words, the McCain’s lead in the polls – celebrated last week by Charlie -- has gone the way of Lehman Brothers. And Charlie's trying to spin it.
Sykes is a classic radio host bully -- hilariously calling out Barack Obama as a sniveling, snot-nosed community organizer (though in any contest one can imagine, Obama would stomp Sykes like he was Jack Ryan). It’s worth noting that back in the spring of 2003 Sykes helped organize rallies to “support the troops” – rallies that doubled as exercise in liberal bashing.
Here’s what failed gubernatorial candidate Mark Green had to say at one (from the 4/13/03 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel):
The crowd cheered U.S. Rep. Mark A. Green (R-Wisconsin) when he said that “for too long I think too many of us have allowed other voices who claim to speak for us to go unchallenged. We've heard it from the Hollywood half-wites who confuse their fame with intelligence or, worse yet, relevance. We've seen the peaceniks marching back and forth at our campuses carrying signs that say anything and everything, everything except for things like 'Saddam must disarm' or 'Freedom for Iraq' or 'We support our troops.'
“My friends, the folks who are here today, we don’t have agendas,” Green continued. “We have mortgages. We don’t chain ourselves to trees. We drive our kids to school. We don’t burn our flags or block the traffic. We pay our taxes, and we try to make payroll. We are the silent majority. Today, we are speaking up.”
In. Yo. Face! Good for Republicans, apparently. Not so much for Democrats, in Sykes' world.
Apparently Sykes’ listeners are nervous that a real majority – people who think Bush is a failure, who don’t want Sarah Palin anywhere near the White House, who want us out of Iraq -- will be speaking up soon.
